The following 10 songs are from different genres and therefore all have a different feel to them, but they are all modern (less than 5 years old), have not been overplayed (at least not at the time of writing this) and they all have perfect lyrics for a first dance as husband and wife.

1. Old Fashioned by Cee Lo Green

This song came out in October 2010, but if you take a listen to it, it has that distinct classic sound to it. It sounds like it has been around for ages and it grows on you instantly from the first listen.

2. I Think, I Love by Jamie Cullum

If you love the sound of Michael Buble, Frank Sinatra etc, but you want something a little less overplayed, then definitely look at something by Jamie Cullum. He has a lovely voice and some truly romantic songs like this slow number that was released in March 2010:

3. I Won't Give Up - Jason Mraz

Jason just writes some amazing lyrics that can give you chills when you listen to them. This song is truly beautiful and real. It is quite popular, but very new (Jan 2012), so probably not overplayed yet.

4. I'll Be There by The Parlotones

Ok, not quite a new one, but I can almost guarantee that it has not been overplayed. This rock/alternative song is from South African band The Parlotones and came out in 2008. Take a listen to the words.

5. I Like to Be With Me When I'm With You - Drew Holcomb

This is such a great little acoustic guitar song with such sweet lyrics. Take a listen and find out if it is for you.

6. The Book Of Love by The Airborne Toxic Event

The Airborne Toxic Event released their cover of the Magnetic Fields song (also famously covered by Peter Gabriel) in September 2010. To me his voice just does justice to this classic song and I included it for those of you who love one of the other versions, but wanted a new twist on it.

7. When You Got A Good Thing by
Lady Antebellum

This is a great duet with the perfect lyrics and it is one of the best first dance wedding songs of the last few years in my opinion.

8. Then - Brad Paisley

A lovely little country song that talks about their love from the moment they met till the present moment and how love just keeps growing. If you love country songs then this song (released in 2009) is just what you are looking for.

9. A Thousand Years - Christina Perri

Only released in October 2011, but due to the popularity of the Twilight books and movies, this song will soon be a first dance favourite. For now, it is still new, and really appropriate and beautiful even if you are not a fan of the Twilight series:

10. I Can't Wait (Be My Wife) - Runner Runner

A really sweet and really appropriate song for a first dance or even for a walk down the aisle.

Originally I wanted to keep this list to 10, but it is really difficult with all the good songs that came out in the last couple of years to choose only 10. Especially if I want to give you some options over various genres. Here are a few more great choices for your first dance or to add in anywhere in your wedding:

All of Me - John Legend

This is a great hit of 2013 and 2014 and is a love song that John Legend wrote for his wife.

The lyrics are so romantic and heartfelt. It is a perfect first dance song or even a processional song!

Wanted - Hunter Hayes

A very nice country song, but it is so nice that I think even if you are not a country fan that you would enjoy it. Do yourself a favor and listen:

Marry Me - Train

Very nice song from this band. "forever could never be long enough for me..." need I say more.

Little Things - One Direction

A very sweet song from this group of pretty boys. The guy basically tells his girl about all the little things about her that make her unique and that he loves about her.
